President's Day Weekend in Williamsburg

Living in Virginia, you would think that we would have visited Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown.  We had not.  As President's Day was approaching, we were discussing with our friends, The Essigs, about taking a trip.  We threw out some possibilities and Williamsburg ended up being the chosen destination.  With red vines, chocolate covered pretzels and veggie chips, we were on the road.

Our day started in Jamestown Settlement.  It is not actually the exact settlement spot but a re-creation of it a few miles away.  The re-creation provided much information about the early settlers and had reenactors (seriously, Trent must be on to something when he says that I want to do this someday) an American Indian village, fort, and boats on the harbor.  We had a fun time roaming around the settlement, taking pictures, and building new skills.

One such skill was grinding corn:

I believe that Ali was the best in this skill. It must be the maternal instinct!

We both got pretty good at air kisses.  A skill needed in so many other countries other than the U.S.

Scraping fur with shells.  This was a job that took all together too long.

Exploring the boats in the harbor brought back my desire to go sailing.

This was definitely the job for me.  Fire in the hole!

Second stop in our journey was to Williamsburg.  My favorite stop was the Peanut Shop.  The shop had all of their chocolate covered nuts out for testing and on sale.  Chocolate covered cashews...yum.  We ate lunch at The Cheese Shop.  A decent sandwich but not worth the wait of 30 minutes.  We wandered down Colonial Williamsbug and then ended with a Salute to the Presidents.  An announcer would read each state that yielded a President and shoot a canon off for each of those states.

Again with the reenactors.

That evening we made our way to the College of William and Mary for a gospel concert.  It made me wish that my church would sometimes be a little more lively when it comes to the choir.  Then we topped the evening off with a slice of Death by Chocolate Cake and a movie.  Thanks Essigs for such a lovely weekend!
